Drawing Trees

Summer is here. The kids are out of school and their new routines are in full effect. I could not be happier to get this year behind us. Scheduling was a nightmare last year. Luckily, next year is already all set. The kids are all signed up for their programs and nobody is on a waiting list. I’ve been getting back into the swing of things too. I went into a bit of a slide for the first quarter of this year, but I’m back to running and drawing. I think I’m going to run a 5k or two this year but we’ll get to that later. I’m working on a new drawing now. It is another one of those things I always wanted to draw but never did…   Bonsai trees are pretty cool right? There is a reason they slip in and out of popularity…   I always feel like something is lost when adding ink. I think it looses the subtle touch and pressure that shows in the graphite....

Tribulation – Podcast Talk

I started this podcast over a month ago. It totally scared the crap out of me. It starts with a couple on a roadtrip. They are listening to the radio when they stubble upon a good ol’ fire and brimstone preacher. It starts escalating and getting more frantic and the episode ends. It really rattled me. It consumed my thoughts for a couple days. I actually had to ready myself before continuing. I wanted to binge the whole season but I also didn’t want it to be over. I limited myself to only 2 episodes in a sitting and I made it into an event, adding a little ritual to my listening. I waited until the kids were in bed, all the day’s chores were done and I had returned from my run so I could just focus on the podcast and draw. I’m going to leave the plot vague and avoid spoilers. I could add more details but I went in blind and it has been quite a trip. One of the...

Relic and Reliquary

I have a habit of obsessing on something for a while and then moving on. My goal has been to direct that obsession and use it. It is clearly part of my nature so I’m trying to work with it and figure out how to use it. Recently I’ve found that staying organized helps. A few months ago I was obsessed with stickers. I scanned some drawings, cleaned them up and printed a bunch. Knowing it was a project that I could break up into parts I tried to focus on those parts and keep them organized. What I ended up with was a ton of unfinished stickers all printed multiple-up on full-sized sheets when my attention started to wane. Instead of totally abandoning the stickers I packed them all up and stored them until it was time to pick them back up. Now I’m in a reading phase. My passion for reading comes and goes. I will read 3 or 4 novels in a row and then stop altogether and...

A Pirate’s Life for Me

I was just recently reminded of an incident that happened when I was in the 4th grade. As with most of my childhood stories, it starts with me starting at a new school. I was sitting in my new English class and my teacher had just introduced me to the class. He went on to tell me that there was a book report due the following week. He said it was an oral report and not only was it an oral report, but the students had to dress up as a character from their book while delivering their report. With a smile he told me that, because I was new, I could just turn in a paper and not worry about the oral part or dressing up. The first week at a new school was always the hardest. I like to think of it in terms of talking about my wife. When I talk about my wife I hate using the term, “my wife.” It’s like she is a possession or something, like, “my car.” When I first...
