More thoughts on The Lion King

on Mar 8, 2019 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

I’ve been thinking about my daughter’s experience with The Lion King. When The Lion King came out I saw it 5 or 6 times in the theatre. I really liked the movie, and still do, but it wasn’t until I started thinking about my daughter’s devastation that I realized how much it affected me too. I think deep down it might have traumatized me a bit.     When playing with my girls I refused to play dead. Don’t get me wrong, I have died a thousand deaths, some of which have taken upwards of 3 minutes to finally take hold, but I never lay motionless while they try to shake me awake. I never really realized why I found it so heartbreaking until now. It has always been a strange fear I carry that something like that would happen. Weirdly, I’ve been thinking about it alot lately and the more I ruminate, the more I realize that this was...

The second bookmark is Tentacool

Here is the second one. I’m having fun doing these. There is something satisfying about knocking these out every couple days. I’m probably repeating myself, but I really like some of these character designs. They are simple yet interesting. They have just enough going on that I can play with them creatively while focusing on things like coloring and line.     I had déjà vu with a twist the other day. I mentioned the incident involving my oldest daughter and her introduction to Sarah McLachlan, well this time I came home to my youngest crying her eyes out. My wife was sitting on the couch comforting her when I walked in. She was hugging her and talking her down. I asked what had happened and my wife told me they had watched The Lion King at school. When I replied, “The Lion King?” My daughter burst into tears again. My youngest then went...

Chime…what? Oh, Chimecho

I made a thing. I made a bunch of things actually. My friend made some bookmarks which inspired me to make bookmarks. It has been a while since I’ve drawn any Pokémon so I thought I’d give it a go (see what I did there?). In Pokémon GO I’ve been obsessed with this weird, obscure monster.     I don’t know why but there is something about the character design that really speaks to me. From what I’ve read, the character isn’t very powerful or meaningful. Actually there isn’t much information available about it at all. Nevertheless I found myself sketching it over and over again so I decided to do something with it.     Is it just me or does the final piece always fall just a little short from your planning sketch?     But I was pretty happy with how the inking turned out.     And of course I had to go...

Finished a Mandala Drawing

on Feb 19, 2019 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

After my last drawing I wanted to do something a little different. Mandalas are one of those neat things that fascinate me. Clearly I’m not the only one because I see them everywhere sold as adult coloring books. I tried one about a year ago that I just freehanded to varying success so I thought I’d try to plan this one out a little better.     Recently I’ve decided to embrace the things that I can do well and focus on them. I really want to draw in a specific way so I’ve been trying to get better at that when I should be building off what I can do well. I recently tweeted, “I never fancied myself a stippler yet here we are.”     I’ve been reading about Mandalas too. As I started reading I quickly found that my drawing isn’t actually a Mandala. The fact I’m only doing a quarter of a circle somewhat...

Persuasive Advertising

I picked my eldest daughter up from school last week and as soon as I saw her I could tell something was wrong. I tried to ask her what was wrong but she just shook her head and refused to make eye contact. I was instantly worried. Horrible scenarios started playing themselves out in my mind. I pulled her close and we went to the car. As soon as her butt hit the seat she started bawling. She was straight-up ugly crying. Between sobs and gasps for air I was able to make out something about a dog. We haven’t gotten a new dog yet and she didn’t have any visible injuries so I was no longer on “high alert” but I was still curious to know what happened. When we got home I was able to calm her down with a glass of water and a small snack and eventually she calmed to the point where she could tell me what happened. She was still upset so her story included alot of,...

Cabin Fever

on Feb 1, 2019 in Uncategorized | 1 comment

I didn’t shave until 2:00pm today. The kids are off school because of the cold, so I’m working from home. I actually get more accomplished. Normally, I have to take alot of breaks but we are so sick of being closed up in this house together that we are just doing our own things today. My girls both woke up, ate breakfast and then immediately headed to their rooms. I checked on them a couple times but they didn’t bug me, or each other, until we regrouped for lunch.   I bought some new body wash. It was on sale and I needed some so I grabbed it. It wasn’t until today that I noticed the label. Charcoal and clay. That’s right. I am SO manly I clean myself with dirt. I use burnt wood and fine dirt to wash away my other dirt. On that note, when I’m feeling glassy I like to give myself a good sandblasting… Ugh. Apparently I’m starting to...
